Questioning your identity? A colour to hold while you work it out

Questioning is a place, not a gap

People talk about questioning as if it were the bit before the real answer. It is not. It is where most of the honest thinking happens, and plenty of people stay there for years and are fine.

That is why Questioning has its own code here — HC-142 — with its own colour and its own pair of words. It is not a waiting room. It is a print on a wall like any other.

Look sideways, not down

The code was never a list. It was a grid: colours next to colours, meanings next to meanings, and you found yours by looking at what was near. We built the site the same way. Every code page shows the four nearest colours and the rest of its cluster. Start anywhere and drift.

Who you are holds thirty gender codes, from cis man to genderfluid to neutrois. Who you love holds orientation. How you love holds the shapes relationships take. Your energy and Your place in the room are about how you move and what you carry for others. None of them is a diagnosis. All of them are colours.

How the record handled uncertainty

The 1980 Damron chart already had colours for “anything goes” and for “novice”. The men who built the code understood that not everyone in the room knew what they wanted yet. Signal orange meant open to everything. A beginner had a colour too. Uncertainty was part of the grammar from the start.

Three things that help

Take the quiz once, then ignore the result for a week and see which colour you keep thinking about. Read the code page for the one that stuck; the history is short and sourced. Make the free swatch with your name in the margin and keep it on your phone. Nobody else needs to see it.

When to talk to a person
